What We Do

We believe music should be affordable and accessible for everyone! The Music Coop provides music lessons for everyone, regardless of financial status. We provide sliding scale and free music lessons to those who need them. For those who can afford it, but have many other things that demand their money and attention, we provide the relief to help keep music in their family’s lives. There are no income requirements. There are no tests to pass and nothing to prove. It's simply music for everyone!

About the Music Coop

From the beginning of our careers, we’ve wanted to offer affordable - or even free! - music lessons and gear to students of all ages, and provide a safe, diverse space to enjoy both. There’s something about a music store, and music itself, that provides shelter from the storminess of life. We would watch kids and adults of all stripes come together to geek out over a song or piece of gear, and we wondered: how can we make the best part of music - the melding of community - into an obvious mission? How can we be inclusive?

Though schools have lost arts funding and though “luxuries” like music are the first to go in an unstable economy, music itself remains a strong thread in everyone’s lives. So many want to learn an instrument, to jam in the universal language of music - but cost is a barrier. We wanted to change this, and make music a reachable priority again. We do this by offering low-cost lessons, giving our teachers a living wage, and making our physical space inclusive and safe.

Our physical space will be safe. What does that mean in 2022? It means our mission is to be inclusive, culturally diverse and warm. Many of our guests may feel like outsiders, whether in school, work or family. Many don’t have a place outside of home or school to just be - to join with other music lovers in an environment where they don’t have to worry who they are, who they love, or who they want to be. Music is all-encompassing by nature, and has potential to transcend bias. Our physical space - through our messaging, our art and our trained instructors - will foster this.

The Music Coop’s teachers boast over 40 years of combined experience. Our instructors are required to have a music degree or 10 years of experience playing and/or teaching music.

Above all, our students need fun, professional and affordable music lessons and supplies. Our students aren't necessarily looking to play at Carnegie Hall (though we can get them there, if they need it!). They're looking to find joy, love, and excitement in music, a joy they can bring into their everyday lives. They're looking for a place where they can be themselves - a safe space inclusive of all kinds of people.
